[Demission-MCR] For an active Switzerland in Europe – now!

After the demission announcement of federal councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, young european swiss | yes asks the Federal Council to grant European policy priority. As foreign minister, Calmy-Rey contributed substantially to the deepening of the EU- Swiss relations through static sectoral bilateral treaties over the last decade. History will credit her resolute countering of isolationist rhetoric and her capacity to find popular majorities for an open Switzerland. Yes demands that the Federal Council pursues Calmy-Rey’s “active foreign policy” and paves the way to full EU member- ship.

Micheline Calmy-Rey served as foreign minister for nine years and shaped Swiss foreign and ...

Open markets – don’t close borders!

young european swiss | yes wishes that Europe encounters the democratic uprising in the Arab world positively. Instead of fueling populist fears and cut back the suc- cesses of European integration such as a border-free Europe, Europe shall recognise the historical potential of these revolutions. Yes demands that the euro- mediterranean partnership is revived. Economic growth offers the best chance to increase living standards in North Africa, reduces migratory potential, weakens ex- tremist forces in the region and lays ground for modern and democratic states around the Mediterranean. Therefore, yes urges the EU and all European States: “Don’t close your ...

Negating the EU assures electoral defeat

young european swiss | yes is concerned by the electoral success of Lega dei Ticinesi, but even more by the non-existing debate on Europe in the cantonal elec- tions in Ticino. Yes is convinced that political parties who avoid the “Europe issue” will lose substantially in the upcoming federal elections. Hence, yes urges all parties to participate in a frank, realist and sustainable debate on Europe for the better of our country and to counter populist rhetoric with constructive arguments.

Lega dei Ticinesi won a historical victory in cantonal elections in 2011 and became the se- cond largest group in the ...

Stop to green anti-migration rhetorics!

young european swiss | yes condemns the announcement of green circles to launch a popular vote on migration restrictions. Such a vote to limit immigration disguised as an ecological measure would not only bring about an anti-immigration debate harmful to our democracy but run counter to the current bilateral treaties on the liber- ty of labour with the EU – and thereby contradict the will of the people expressed several times so far. Therefore, yes ultimately summons the initiating committee to abandon their plans and to spare Switzerland from another nefarious hate-guided populist campaign.

On April 2nd, 2011, the ECOPOP organisation decided ...

Switzerland in Schengen: Schengen is a success!

young european swiss | yes consider Swiss membership in the Schengen zone a success. Contrary to the SPP, yes points out three advantages of this membership: 1. Schengen increases security thanks to its tools to fight organised crime. 2. Schengen is economically important as it lowers visa barriers and attracts invest-ments from emerging markets. 3. Schengen creates a ‘space of freedom, security and law’ in Europe which stabilises the continent. Only with regards to the undemocratic and un-Swiss, "voluntary alignment", yes shares the SPP’s concerns – and suggests to overcome this deficit through a full membership in the EU.

At the ...
